Meet Dr. Alla Nicolulis

I am Dr. Alla Nicolulis, Naturopathic Physician and Licensed Acupuncturist. Naturopathic medicine has always been a part of me. I was born and raised in Ukraine, and since a young age I always spent every free day from school and summers at my grandparent’s farm. My grandmother always used herbs and nature healing to treat all kinds of conditions. I remember drying herbs on the racks and my grandma telling me what they are good for treating.

At the age of six I decided that I wanted to be a doctor, and this is when my journey began. At eleven  years old I got accepted to a school with pre-med classes and was accepted to medical college after ninth grade. I completed high school requirements and studied at the medical college at the same time.  When I was twenty years old I already had a diploma equivalent to Physician Assistant and started working at the local hospital.

Remembering I wanted to be a doctor, six months later I was in the medical university pursuing that dream. During medical school I worked as a registered nurse on the weekends (in Ukraine you receive nurse’s education while studying for PA). While in medical school I participated in student research and published some research articles on variants of anatomy and infections disease cases under the guidance of my teachers. I also participated in a few medical conferences where I presented my research. After completing six years of Medical school and becoming a MD (Ukraine) I completed two years of internal disease residency in the hospital in my home town. In my practice I used not only pharmaceutical treatment plans for patients, but also incorporated herbs, physiotherapy, diet and nutritional counseling. I saw that combining all these together can bring much faster and sometimes longer lasting results in treating diseases.

While living in the US and learning English, I became very interested in the holistic healing powers of Naturopathic and Chinese medicine. It reminded me of my roots working in my grandmother’s garden growing medicinal herbs. After realizing a natural approach to medicine was my calling I completed two separate four year programs within six years at the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland OR. I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to learn three different medical models, Conventional, Naturopathic, Chinese medicine, and being able to incorporate them into my practice. I have a particular interest in skin as I always struggled with my own skin problems since my childhood. I like to address underlying issues first, before I focus on treating what I see on the skin. For me skin a like a mirror of what is going on inside the body. I also enjoy learning about natural ways to rejuvenate our skin, so there is a long lasting and natural effect, not just the skin but also the whole body.

In my free time, I like to connect with nature and work in the garden. I have many medicinal plants and trees. I’m enjoying learning more about native pacific NW plants.  Many years ago I fell in love with the beautiful mountains of Sierra Nevada's where I used to live with my husband before coming to Oregon. Now we live with our twin boys in rural Oregon surrounded by pristine nature.
